Why am I passionate about this?

Ever since reading Heir to the Empire (Timothy Zahn), I’ve been fascinated by science fiction stories with amazing characters and intriguing concepts. I love finding a new story, especially one that isn’t being talked about, and falling into that world. I still get lost in the worlds of the Deathgate Cycle and Rose of the Prophets because they introduced me to concepts and places I’d never imagined or thought to imagine before reading them. I crafted a world and characters both familiar and alien because of these influences and I’m still drawn to them when I start a new book no one is talking about, like those on this list.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Project Hail Mary

Brian Guthrie Why did I love this book?

From the moment I first began listening to the audiobook, I fell in love with this story. I was all in the moment Ryland Grace stumbled through answering the question “What is 2 plus 2?” The layering of the story, the threat to Earth concept, the educational presentation of very high-level scientific concepts to an audience of all ages, and the way Andy Weir made this reader feel so many emotions over a rock just keep drawing me back to it.

I literally just finished another listen less than a month ago and already want to go back to a story. I still don’t see many people talking about it. And the ending? Every story has its own perfect dismount landing, and this one nailed it.

By Andy Weir,

Why should I read it?

What is this book about?

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through…

Book cover of Pilot X

Brian Guthrie Why did I love this book?

If you want a blend of fun science fiction serials from the earliest days of television mixed with everything you love about modern Doctor Who set in an entirely new setting that draws you in from the moment you start reading, this book is the one to do it. The author deftly weaves a fantastic story centered around an impossible decision and the only person who can make it, aptly capturing the struggle involved in making the worst choice ever.

I still remember where I was when I read this book so many years later. The only thing disappointing about it was that it ended in such a way that this reader thought it was over. Tom Merritt said, “No, I have one more.” Be glad he wrote Trigor because you will not want to be done when Pilot X ends.

Pilot X is Ambassador of the Alendans, a race with the ability to move through space and time as guardians of the timeline. Locked in ongoing conflict with the Sensaurians, an organic hive mind that can send messages in thought throughout its own history, and the Progons, a machine race…

Book cover of The Life Engineered

Brian Guthrie Why did I love this book?

Do you know who Karel Čapek is? Did you know he invented the word robot? Do you love Norse mythology given to you with a twist? Well, The Life Engineered gives you robots modeled on Karel Čapek’s designs, a faster-than-light travel system you’ve probably never seen or heard of, and a civilization of robots (chapeks) modeled on Norse mythology trying to continue existing while waiting for the expected return of humans.

From the moment I started, I was learning new concepts and ways to imagine science-fiction norms like those described above. And that cover? So much humanity in a single picture of a robot. Read this book, and then go check out the sequel Arch-Android on Inkshares.com. The little science-fiction-loving kid in you will be very happy you did.

What is this book about?

"J-F. Dubeau’s The Life Engineered is a real page turner for anyone interested in science fiction and good literature. It brought a smile to my face as some passages made me reminisce of my own time spent aboard Galactica as a Raptor pilot!" ― Leah Cairns, Battlestar Galactica and Interstellar

JF Dubeau’s debut novel, The Life Engineered begins in the year 3594, where humanity is little more than a memory―a legend of the distant past destined to reappear. Capeks, a race of artificial creatures originally created by humans, have inherited the galaxy and formed a utopian civilization built on the…

Book cover of Beacon 23

Brian Guthrie Why did I love this book?

As a veteran forced to take part in military action I later regret deeply, this book haunts me. I have not been able to forget it. Nothing in this story is a throw-away moment. Everything matters. It is filled with familiar concepts and science-fiction/horror main-stays you will recognize. But all of that serves as the vehicle to the story of a war hero who didn’t want to be one because he didn’t believe he deserved it and is now running away from it all to hide in a “lighthouse” in space as far from war as he can hope to get.

It’s no surprise at all when the war shows up on his doorstep, and all the painstaking work done by the author up to that point pays off in the best way.

Book cover of Ageless

Brian Guthrie Why did I love this book?

So, you’re a fan of history, science-fiction, and alternative history all in one? Love to read things that open your mind to new possibilities? Then Ageless is for you. Paul Inman weaves a tale of a hero’s origin story trapped in events they cannot escape from, all in settings and times students of history will recognize but with just enough changes to make this an alt-history story.

The non-linear presentation of the story enhances through its jarring shifts the experiences of all the characters. I don’t think you could tell this story in a linear fashion owing to how the author reveals the mysteries and delivers on the resolution in a romp through time and space you will not regret picking up.

"Ageless is a debut for the ages and Inman is a talented new writer for readers to watch out for." ― Examiner.com
